Gary Stapleton
Attorney

Gary’s deeply held belief that each of us has a responsibility to make a better world for each new generation led him to a career in the law that focuses on clients working to accelerate the energy transition and create a sustainable future. As a trusted adviser who has worked on every angle of a transaction, Gary provides legal and strategic advice to achieve client goals while mitigating risks. Gary serves as advocate, adviser or negotiator to companies, investors, and developers.

Gary brings over a decade of experience ranging from representing solar, wind and battery storage developers, emerging and unique technology developers, waste-to-fuels and biomass projects, large real estate preservation and mitigation projects, complex and highly visible infrastructure projects, to advising investors looking to acquire single asset or portfolios of assets across the clean energy and technology spectrums in the U.S. and internationally. Prior to joining Clean Energy Counsel, Gary was Counsel in the Baltimore office of Hogan Lovells US LLP.

Gary understands how to successfully structure teams to get the job done for clients. Whether working solo or leading teams of dozens of lawyers across the globe to meet client needs, Gary puts, first and foremost, the needs and objectives of the client as the guide star on every deal. He thrives in solving complex strategic and legal challenges – including structuring mergers and acquisitions transactions, project development, construction deals, emerging technologies, energy transition transactions, real estate transactions, consulting services, contracting services, supply agreements, and every flavor of project agreement.

A lifelong Marylander, Gary is committed to giving back to the local Baltimore community through his pro bono practice. Prior to entering the practice of law, he also served as an AmeriCorps volunteer and service coordinator, supporting and empowering at-risk youth in Baltimore City. Gary is an avid gardener, EV enthusiast, camper and fisherman. When not at his desk, Gary most enjoys spending time with his wife, two kids, two dogs and Spock the cat.
